Working mainly in Amsterdam, the artist gained fame for his idealised landscapes and still lifes of flowers and fruits. Such flower compositions were highly popular in 17th-century Holland and van Huijsum always emphasized their decorative qualities. He paid great attention to the varied forms of the flowers, the nuances of colouring, painting the whole in a free, spontaneous and dynamic style.
