Paintings on Oriental themes by Decamps were extremely popular at the Paris Salons, and are marked not - like the works of other lesser Romantic artists - by ethnographic realism but by daring experiments with colour, lighting effects and technical devices. This work shows Decamps' characteristic emphasis on painterly rather than linear and sculptural effects, which we can see in the sketch-like drawing and the soft gradations of warm reddish-brown tones.
