In this painting Corot, a master of the landscape, created the effect of spacial depth and light and air by using minute variations and nuances of the same colour. The soft transition from the darker colours of the foreground, to the colours of the distance, melting in the misty morning light, is built up through gradations of silvery-green and greyish-blue tones.
To the right the thick, spreading crowns of the trees appear as a dark silhouette against the light sky. They are contrasted with the tall trees with twisted trunks, the leaves of which are marked with light, broken olive-grey strokes.
