Ekaterina Shuvalova, nee Saltykova, was the wife of Count Andrey Shuvalov. This portrait, like its pendant portrait of her husband , was painted by Greuze while the couple were in Paris, sometime between 1776 and 1781. The soft contour of the oval format of the painting repeats the soft oval of the face and at the same time determines the majestic structure of the portrait. The colouring is typical for the artist, a combination of green, olive and brown tones, with a touch of bright blue in the ribbon in the hair.
